Why a full service is worth doing every year
A full service is the proper once-a-year overhaul. It goes well beyond fresh oil: it replaces the parts that have a set life, checks everything that can be checked without taking the car apart, and gives you a clear picture of what condition it is really in. Done on time, it is the best protection against the sort of breakdown that happens on a Monday morning with nowhere to be but late.
It also protects what the car is worth. A service record that shows regular, thorough work is something a buyer notices, and it keeps the engine, brakes and running gear within the limits they were designed to run at.
What the car tells you when it is overdue
You do not need to wait for a warning light. Common signs a full service has been left too long include:
- Hesitation or a flat spot when you accelerate, especially on a hill
- Rising fuel use and a rougher idle than you remember
- A noticeably softer brake pedal or longer stopping distance
- Dim headlights, a slow-turning engine on cold mornings, or a damp smell from the vents
- Rattles, squeaks or clunks over uneven roads
- More than a year or 12,000 miles since the last proper service
If you have bought a used car and have no idea when it was last done, treat it as overdue and start fresh.
A full service for Sheffield roads and weather
The city asks a lot of a car. Constant climbing and descending means the clutch, gearbox and brakes do more work than they would on flat ground, and a steep drive in somewhere like Crosspool or Stannington is a good test of a handbrake. Winter brings gritting lorries, salt spray and slush, which eats at brake pipes, exhaust fixings and suspension components.
Then there is the stop-start of the Parkway queue, the A61 or the run in from the Peak edge. Cars that spend their lives in traffic collect more wear in the air filter, spark plugs and engine mounts than the mileage suggests. We pay attention to all of that, and we will tell you plainly what is wearing ahead of time.
What happens during a mobile full service
We arrive with filters, oil and tools and work wherever the car is parked: a driveway, a quiet side street or your workplace. A full service usually takes two to three hours, and you are free to carry on with your day, because you do not have to be there.
The oil and filter are changed, and other parts are replaced as the schedule for your car requires, such as the air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs where they are due. We check and top up the fluids, look at the brakes, the suspension, tyres, lights, wipers, battery and belts, and note anything that is close to the end of its life.
Before we begin you get a clear quote, and the price is agreed in advance. If we find something extra, we call before doing it. You then get a written record of everything carried out.
Choosing the right service level
If you only cover a small mileage or had a service a few months ago, an interim service may be enough. Some owners prefer to book a vehicle health check first, to see where the car stands.
Services often show up work that needs doing: worn brake discs and pads, a tired suspension component, or an overdue cambelt. Older cars may also need a new battery by the time the cold weather arrives. If you are buying, a pre-purchase inspection is a separate job that suits that purpose better.
