Why a tyre fitted at your door suits Sheffield
Four patches of rubber, each about the size of your hand, are all that connects a car to the road. In a city built over seven hills that matters more than it might in a flat town. Tyres here are asked to grip on long descents, bite on steep climbs in the wet and hold the car steady on cambered side roads. When the tread is thin or a tyre has been damaged, the first place you notice it is usually the hill you drive every day.
A mobile tyre fitter removes the usual bother. We bring the machine, the wheel balancer and the new tyres to your home, workplace or the spot where you have broken down, so there is no queue at a tyre depot and no day spent waiting for a bus back.
Signs a tyre needs attention
Some warning signs are easy to spot and others creep up. Check for the following when you are next walking round the car:
- Tread that is close to the wear bars, or visibly uneven from one edge to the other
- A bulge or blister on the sidewall, often from clipping a kerb or dropping into a pothole
- Cracks in the rubber, common on tyres that are several years old even if the tread looks fine
- A slow puncture that leaves one tyre soft every few days
- A steering wheel that shimmies at motorway speed, which can point to a balance problem
If you are not sure, send us a note through the free quote form with the tyre size printed on the sidewall, and we will tell you what we would suggest before anything is booked.
What happens during a mobile visit
We arrive in a fully equipped van, usually within the slot we agreed. We need a reasonably flat, safe place to work, and a drive, a quiet street or a workplace car park will all do. If your own road is steep, we will pick the most level spot nearby and chock the wheels properly before lifting anything.
Each wheel comes off, the old tyre is removed and the new one is fitted, then the wheel is balanced and put back with the nuts tightened to the maker’s torque setting. Please have your locking wheel nut key ready, as it is the most common reason a fitting has to be rearranged. Valves are renewed where needed, and we take the old tyres away for proper disposal. A set of four usually takes about an hour, and a single replacement a good deal less.
Salt, potholes and the other things Sheffield does to tyres
Winter gritting keeps the main roads moving, but the salt and grit left behind get into every kerbside and find every weak spot in a wheel. Freeze and thaw then break up road surfaces, and the potholes that follow are a leading cause of sidewall damage. Roads such as the A57 out towards Ladybower and the Peak edge lanes beyond Hathersage can be hard on tyres in a cold spell, particularly where the surface has been patched.
Tight terraced streets cause their own damage. Pulling in against a high kerb in Walkley or Hillsborough scuffs sidewalls, and a tyre that has been scraped repeatedly can fail without warning. If you notice a scuff, have it looked at rather than waiting for it to show up as a flat. A wheel that has taken a hard knock may also have a bent rim or tracking out of line, so it is worth having a mechanic check the suspension and steering at the same time.
Tyres, brakes and the rest of the car
Tyres rarely wear in isolation. A car that pulls to one side and chews through the front tyres may need its steering geometry checked, and uneven wear on a car that does plenty of downhill driving can show that the brakes are working unevenly. When we have the wheels off it costs nothing extra to look at the discs and pads, and we will tell you what we find before suggesting anything.
If a tyre has gone flat on the road and you cannot get to a safe spot, our roadside breakdown help covers a wheel change on the spot. Many customers also pair new tyres with a vehicle health check, which is a sensible way to catch other wear while the car is already on the drive.
Where we fit tyres around Sheffield
We cover the city and roughly twenty miles around it. That takes in the student streets of Nether Edge and the commuter roads of Woodseats, the Don valley from Hillsborough out to Chapeltown, and the villages to the north such as Oughtibridge. We also work across to Dronfield and Rotherham, and in the city centre itself.
To book, fill in the free quote form with your car, tyre size and postcode. You will get a clear price first, agreed before any work starts, with no deposit and a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm.
