An oil and filter change, and why it earns its place
Engine oil does several jobs at once. It lubricates moving parts, carries away heat, holds tiny particles in suspension and protects against corrosion. The filter catches the grit and soot that oil collects. Over time, both give up. Old oil thickens, loses its protective qualities and fills with contamination, and a clogged filter either restricts flow or lets dirty oil bypass it.
It is one of the cheapest ways to protect an engine, and one of the easiest to put off. A fresh change takes under an hour and can add years to the engine’s life.
Short trips, cold starts and Sheffield’s hills
Sheffield driving is rougher on oil than it looks. Many journeys here are short, a run to the school, the tram stop or the supermarket, and an engine that never fully warms up lets moisture and fuel build up in the oil. Cold mornings in winter make that worse. Stop-start traffic around Meadowhall, on the Parkway and along Abbeydale Road adds more strain, and so do the long climbs out of the Don valley, where the engine works hard under load.
If your car mainly does this sort of driving, a change at the shorter end of the recommended interval is sensible, and the handbook will have a ‘severe use’ figure to follow.
What a mobile visit involves
We come to you with the oil, the filter and a new sump washer where one is needed. The car sits on level ground or on ramps or stands, the old oil drains into a sealed container, and the old filter comes off and is replaced. We refill to the correct level with the grade your engine specifies, check for leaks, and reset the service reminder where the car has one.
You do not need to supply anything, and we protect your drive with drip trays and mats. Used oil and filters go away with us for proper recycling. A drive, a garage forecourt, a workplace space or a quiet street will do, and the job usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
Before we start, we confirm the oil grade and quantity against your registration, because the wrong specification can harm modern engines with particulate filters or turbochargers.
Signs your oil is overdue
Most cars give hints. Look for these:
- The oil warning light on the dashboard, or the service reminder showing
- Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick, or a level that is falling between checks
- A rougher, noisier engine, especially at idle
- A smell of burning oil, or blue-grey smoke from the exhaust
- More than a year, or the manufacturer’s mileage, since the last change
If the oil light comes on while driving, pull over safely and switch off. Our roadside breakdown help can reach you if the car will not move.
Where it fits in the wider servicing picture
An oil and filter change is the core of any service. If your car is due more than that, an interim service adds a wider set of checks, and a full service covers air and pollen filters, spark plugs and more. If you have been told your car needs attention but are unsure what, a vehicle health check is a good place to start.
Where a warning light stays on after the oil is topped up, diagnostics and fault finding will tell you the cause.
